The DNA Typo (Mutation)

UV rays, chemicals, or random copying errors damage genes. Specifically, they damage genes that control cell growth: Oncogenes (the cell accelerator) or Tumor Suppressors (the brakes).

Evading Cell Death (Apoptosis)

Normal damaged cells commit suicide for the good of the body (apoptosis). Cancer cells bypass this self-destruct command, becoming virtually immortal.

Hustling for Fuel (Angiogenesis)

As the tumor grows, it sends distress signals to nearby blood vessels: "Build pipes to me!". This steals nutrients and oxygen from healthy structures.

Breaking Out (Metastasis)

In later stages, cells break off from the primary tumor, travel through the bloodstream, and colonize new, distant organs. This is called metastasis.
